More tips to avoid spam

Everyone complains about getting too much spam. Some people complain about getting a few spam messages a week. These are the lucky ones. The majority of us will be getting more, but careful use of the spam tools in Webmail can help.

Here are some tips to reduce the amount of spam you get.

  • Never, ever reply to a spam email. A reply to a genuine spammer's address may just ensure that you get more spam, as the spammer will know someone is reading the email. These days, reply addresses are more likely to be fake or stolen addresses, so the reply will just go to someone who has nothing to do with the spam.
  • Don't click on "remove me from the list" type links, as these simply inform the spammer that the mail has been read, and they will send more.
  • Use an email client that blocks images in emails. Images in spam mails are sometimes called "bugs", because they inform the spammer that the mail has been read.
  • Don't give out email addresses to untrusted sources. Adult sites are particularly unscrupulous about selling their client lists to anyone.
  • Try not to post email addresses in news groups or message boards, as spammers use tools that "scrape" these sources for addresses to add to their lists.
  • Don't buy spammed products. If no-one bought the things spammers sell, there would be no spam.
